America’s broken political system continues to reinforce, and exacerbate, structural barriers to representation, participation, and self-government for marginalized communities. Though a record number of candidates from diverse backgrounds ran and won in 2018, marginalized groups must overcome unique obstacles and make immense sacrifices to have their voices heard.
An inclusive democracy must reflect the people it purports to represent. The promise of democracy reform, and the web of issues related to and dependent on it, will not be realized unless and until diverse voices are at its forefront.
